![]() ![]() Sulyvahn then offers Gwyndolin to Aldrich to be devoured. Sulyvahn, Archdeacon Royce, Archdeacon McDonnell, and Archdeacon Klimt were the main leaders of the Church, succeeding Aldrich.Īfter Aldrich rose from his coffin in the Cathedral of the Deep, he journeyed to the cathedral of Anor Londo with McDonnell, where Sulyvahn had imprisoned the god of the Darkmoon Dark Sun Gwyndolin and his sister Company Captain Yorshka after taking control of the city. Sulyvahn also became a devout follower of the Church of the Deep founded by Saint Aldrich. Notable members among the Outrider Knights were Vordt and The Dancer of the Boreal Valley (a distant daughter of the Irithyllian royal family), both of whom were tasked with conquering Lothric prior to the Undead Curse's resurgence and prior to the rekindling of the last true Age of Fire. Outrider knights were therefore seen as exiles unworthy of praise, as they were fated to be nothing more than dogs of war for the twisted sorcerer's campaign. To make sure the Outriders never betrayed or opposed the Pontiff, they were gifted magical rings that, unbeknownst to them, would eventually drive them mad with visions of endless combat and turn them into feral beasts. He eventually accomplished his goal through subterfuge against the Darkmoon Knights, and created his own Pontiff Knights to maintain control in Irithyll while his Outrider Knights were sent to conquer faraway lands. Taking the Profaned Greatsword along with his ambition, he set out to control Irithyll. The young frost sorcerer eventually encountered the Profaned Capital below a tundra, some distance from Irithyll, and found the Profaned Flame within it. As such, he had no meaningful connection to the Painted World, and subsequently went on an indefinite pilgrimage outside the painting to the wider world, forsaking the frost sorceries that Ariandel had pioneered, in favor of more esoteric magic. Despite being born and raised inside the painting, he had not yet experienced the loss or despair that most residents of the painting had prior to their arrival. From the unused dialogue in the Painted World, as well as the tree-like motifs visible on Sulyvahn himself, one can surmise that he is the son of the feral Tree Woman found in the painting. Though little is certain regarding Sulyvahn's true nature, The Ashes of Ariandel expansion reveals that Sulyvahn was born in the Painted World of Ariandel. Sulyvahn is located in the large cathedral at the end of Irithyll of the Boreal Valley. When the Ashen One enters the church, Sulyvahn is standing still with his two swords, when the Ashen One approaches his swords begin to glow and he advances towards the player before quickly charging with an overhead slash.ĭuring the fight, Sulyvahn can be heard grunting and growling in a deep, distorted voice. Sulyvahn wields two greatswords: the Profaned Ultra Greatsword in his right hand and the Greatsword of Judgment in his left. Due to his origins (see below), it could be surmised that he was born this way. ![]() His skin is pale and seems to be decayed and covered in large cracks. You can roll aside to avoid the arrows, and under the wave.Sulyvahn is a tall humanoid clothed in ceremonial robes adorned with jewelry. With the magic sword, he may fire Soul Arrows or send a wave of purple magic at you. For the lunge, you need to roll under his arch for the slam, you need to keep your distance. ![]() With the fire sword, he’ll leap into the air and either lunge at you or slam into the ground, releasing a burst of flame. When he reaches about 80% health, Pontiff Sulyvahn will curl up briefly – stay back during this time, as he buffs himself while releasing a cloud of dark energy. It may seem counterintuitive to press against a swordsman, but it’s the safest place to be. Here’s the good news: all of these attacks are best dodged by sticking right up against the Pontiff and dodging around him. He may also charge forward with the magic sword that’ll pierce you and explode with magic damage if you don’t move. He will mostly attack using the flame sword, using sweeps and swords and vertical slams. Pontiff Sulyvahn is a difficult boss, mostly due to his fire- and magic-infused swords. ![]()
